Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education is committed to the highest standards of research and teaching and is a significant contributor to the improvement of educational policy and practice in partnership with schools, colleges and other educational agencies in the world.

The Faculty became one of the largest groups of educational researchers and teacher educators in the world. The new grouping reflects a strategic commitment by the West Coast Institute of Management & technology Australia (WCIMT Australia) to contribute to excellence in all phases of public education, both locally and internationally. The Faculty currently has an academic staff of ten professors, and 30 lecturers/senior lecturers and over 50 support staffs.

The Faculty of Education has a commitment to conducting research of high quality and practical value. Our research is underpinned by a strong set of values which give it purpose and direction. Particular effort is directed towards the improvement of education with a central focus on teaching and learning, informed by principles of exclusivity and social justice, and valuing the contribution of user groups, especially practitioners, in collaborative research partnerships.

The Faculty has academic groups focusing on many aspects of education, some generic (inclusion and special provision; leadership and improvement; learning and teaching), some phase-specific (early years and primary; secondary), and some subject-specific (arts; language and literature; mathematics; science), as well as on studies of education from disciplinary and inter-disciplinary perspectives (economics, history, philosophy and sociology; neuroscience and psychology).

Teaching programmes are planned to support and benefit from the research interests, expertise and activity of staff with all lecturers expected to contribute to several areas of the Faculty’s teaching. The student body comprises approximately 500 students both undergraduates, postgraduate research students following certificate, diploma, masters and doctoral programmes. The Faculty works in close partnership with educational providers and funders across the region to successfully deliver professional and practitioner based learning programmes. Our current provision includes the Postgraduate Diploma in Education, undergraduate degree programmes, a wide range of Continuous Professional Development courses and an expanding part-time higher degrees programme.

The wide range of expertise in the Faculty covers all stages of formal education, principally from the early years, through the primary and secondary stages of schooling, but also extending to the post-compulsory, further and higher education sectors; it also includes all the main subjects of the National curriculum. The Faculty is therefore well placed to make major contributions both to the advancement of knowledge and practice about issues of contemporary significance and to the development of individuals and educational institutions.

Department of Gifted Learning

The department of Gifted Learning commits to the belief that education is a means by which each individual has the opportunity to reach his or her fullest potential. We believe that all students have a right to educational experiences that challenge their individual development whether it is below, at, or beyond the level of their age peers. In accordance with this philosophy, Georgia schools provide educational programs that recognize and make provisions for the special needs of gifted and talented learners.

Department of Continuing Teacher Education

Welcome! The Department for Continuing Teacher Education offers courses covering a wide range of subjects, and many of them lead to university qualifications. Provision is made for individuals, education organisations, and professional groups. Courses are offered on a part-time basis, online, or in the form of short courses.

In recent years the Department has grown very considerably, and now every year more than 1,000 people join one or more of our courses. Our students may be members of the public and private schools, who wish to study a subject out of general interest or for personal satisfaction, members of professional groups or business organisations who wish to update their professional knowledge and skills, or participants in our increasingly large number of courses for international groups.

Most of our longer courses now lead to a degree or other forms of credit, but the large number of short courses offered every year may be taken by those who are less interested in obtaining further qualifications. Courses last from one day to several weeks; the residential courses are held in Asia, but other part-time courses are also held in a large number of other centres.

The international programmes organised by the Department for Continuing Teacher Education attract hundreds of students each year. Participants come from over fifty countries, mainly the Asia, India, Africa, European countries, China and Hong Kong.
